Benefits
Our bodies need water to stay healthy. About 60% of the human body is made up of water, and it plays an important role in almost every system within our bodies. Staying properly hydrated means drinking enough water each day to help our bodies work the way they should.
When we are properly hydrated, our brain functions better. Water helps us think clearly, stay focused, and keep our mood steady. Even a small amount of dehydration can cause headaches, tiredness, or trouble concentrating. For students and athletes, this
Proper hydration also supports our physical health. It helps regulate our body temperature, keeps our joints lubricated, and allows our muscles to work more efficiently. When we exercise, our body loses water through sweat and breathing, so replacing those fluids is important to prevent cramps and fatigue.
Drinking enough water is good for our organs, too. It helps our kidneys remove waste and prevents problems like kidney stones or urinary infections. Water also keeps our digestive system running smoothly and helps our body absorb nutrients.
Staying hydrated can also improve the health of our skin and overall appearance. It keeps our skin soft and helps our body maintain a healthy glow.
Proper Hydration
The amount of water you need each day depends on our age, body size, activity level, and environment. On average, most teens and adults should drink about eight cups or 1/2 gallon of water a day, but active people may need more. When you exercise, your body loses water through sweat and respiration or breathing. To stay hydrated, it’s important to drink an extra 1 to 2 cups of water for every hour of physical activity. If you’re sweating heavily or exercising in hot weather, you may need even more—up to 3 cups per hour. Drinking water before, during, and after exercise helps replace the fluids your body loses and prevents dehydration.
A good rule of thumb is to drink water regularly throughout the day instead of waiting until you feel thirsty. When exercising we should aim to drink about a 1/2-cup of water every 15 to 20 minutes. This should be adjusted based on the intensity of our workout. It is not necessary to drink water every few minutes during exercise, and this can actually become a distraction from our immersion and focus on martial arts training.
Dehydration/Overhydration
Some early signs of dehydration or not drinking enough water include thirst, dry mouth, fatigue, and dizziness. Headache and dark urine are also signs that your body isn’t working at its best because of a lack of water. Dry skin and muscle cramps can also occur, especially after exercise or in hot weather. In more serious cases, dehydration can cause confusion, rapid heartbeat, or fainting. So, it’s important to drink water regularly throughout the day.
More rare, but also possible is to over-hydrate. An excessive amount of water in our body will dilute the sodium and electrolytes in our blood, causing the cells in our bodies to swell. This can lead to a dangerous condition called Hyponatremia. Hyponatremia can cause the cells in our brains to swell leading to confusion, headaches, muscle cramping, weakness, or nausea. In extreme cases this can result in seizures, coma, and even brain damage. Keep in mind that our kidneys can only process about 4 cups of water per hour, so we should limit our consumption accordingly.
So, remember that staying properly hydrated throughout the day is a simple habit that can keep us feeling energized, focused, and healthy. Smart hydration habits in martial arts training or supplemental workouts will improve our physical and mental performance, optimize learning, keeping us ready for whatever comes our way.
