At ZenQuest Jiu-jitsu World Champion and UFC contender Demian Maia stopped into ZenQuest to provide an amazing seminar on Wednesday, November 20. Exactly forty participants were treated to some of the strategies that has made him one of the most notorious grapplers in history. Professor Demian was joined by long time friend and training partner Rodrigo “Comprido” Modeiros for the clinic. Comprido (“lanky” in Portuguese) also had some world class tricks to show, as a several-time World Jiu-jitsu Champ himself.
Demian and Comprido covered some reliable “stand-up” takedowns, and ways to takedown an opponent after being thrown. They also touched on strategies from the “turtle” position (where a defender is on his hands and knees) and from a position called “half-guard.”
At the end of the workshop Demian told the group that he noticed a significant change in the overall technical abilities of the students since his last visit in November of 2012. Many of the participants also commented on how much they learned from, and enjoyed the clinic. Demian also stated that he will try to provide two DMJJ seminars per year at each affiliate location in the future.
In Ontario – After an overnight in the Berkshires Demian Maia, Rodrigo Modeiros, and Flavio Scorsato (their Manager) climbed into Coach Mark’s truck and drove to Barrie, Ontario. Upon arriving at Empire Mixed Martial Arts Academy in Barrie, Demian and Comprdo began instructing at the annual Demian Maia Jiu-jitsu Instructor Training. The training consisted of about four hours of instruction and quality control issues for the North American Affiliates under Demian.

On Sunday, November 24, after the two Jiu-jitsu stars lead an AM group class, the affiliate instructors were given the opportunity to grapple or “roll” with Demian and Comprido. That afternoon Demian and Comprido gave another amazing three hour seminar. The first half of that hands-on workshop was virtually the same as that given at ZenQuest, but the second half consisted of different material.
At the conclusion of the affiliate training four promotions were given. Coach William Pierce from Oklahoma was promoted to Purple Belt, Coach Mark was promoted to two-stripe Brown Belt, and Daniel Castro of Miami was promoted to four-stripe Brown Belt. Coach Mark was also instructed by Demian to award Coach Connie with a stripe on her Brown Belt.
During the Canada training Coach Mark got to spend quite a bit of time with Demian and Comprido outside of the gym. More than ever, he was impressed with how down-to-earth and relaxed thy both were in person. As it turns out, Comprido is something of a practical joker, and was constantly messing with and pranking everyone at the training…including Demian!
