Demian Maia stepped into the UFC octagon again on Saturday, August 27 in his pursuit of the Welterweight title.  Demian faced former Interim UFC Welterweight Champion, and WEC Welterweight Champion, Carlos Condit. Nicknamed "The Natural Born Killer," Condit is regarded as one of the most ferocious finishers in the fight game.
As the fight got underway, Demian was precise in maintaining a safe distance just outside of Condit’s range and slowly moved Condit back towards the cage.  Maia shot in for his first takedown within 40 seconds of the bout and, after Condit initially defended, Demian completed the move.  Demian then landed some ground-and-pound strikes, and methodically worked his way onto Condit’s back less than a minute later.  Condit tried to sit up against the fence as Demian wrapped his right arm around Carlos’ neck.  Condit used both hands to try and peel away Maia’s grip, but Demian got his arm under the chin and tightened the Rear-Choke, and Condit was forced to submit.  Many people were stunned to look up at the clock and find that only 1:52 had passed in the contest.
This win, for some reason, has really gotten the attention of the MMA fans, and been met with a sense of pride and enthusiasm among Jiu-jitsu fans around the world.  It could be that because Condit is considered one of the most dangerous “strikers” in MMA, and is a former Welterweight Champion, many people saw this challenge as a difficult one for Demian....and when Demian completely dominated him, the fans sat-up and took notice.  It could be that with the accumulation of what Demian has accomplished in his last six fights, it’s finally hitting home with many people that he is truly one of the top fighters in the world.  A statistic that’s floating around now is that Demian has only had a total of 13 significant strikes landed on him in his last four fights.  Condit landed one.
Demian has now accomplished his goal of proving the effectiveness of Brazilan Jiu-jitsu...against the best fighters on the planet.  In his life’s work, he has amassed five world titles in BJJ, has submitted 24 of the best fighters in MMA, is currently the number 3 contender in the UFC, and will likely get a shot at the title in the welterweight division (170#) soon.  However, win, lose or draw...it will always stand that Demian is a Master of Jiu-jitsu who can consistently dominate the best fighters in the world, and make it work under the harshest conditions.
Congratulations to Professor Demian and the Team!!
